Bridging the gap between rehab and fitness
Weaknesses of PT delivered in traditional
out-patient settings:
In our extensive experience in out-patient
rehabilitation we have identified several
limitations that exist in the current
delivery models.
• Often patients opt not to return after 1-2
PT sessions due to a lack of available time
in their schedules to fit in PT sessions.
Often a patient needs earlier/later
appointments than the PT provider is able to
accommodate or is unable to book
appointments at busier times. These
individuals often end up with unsatisfactory
surgical outcomes and or chronic
pain/discomfort from failing to complete
adequate rehabilitation
• High insurance deductibles or co pays also
present an obstacle for patients. Low
premium plans with high deductibles are
becoming increasingly popular, forcing
patients to pay up to 100 dollars per visit.
• The most glaring problem with PT delivered
in traditional settings is the lack of
ability to progress patients to full
recovery and return to their previous
activity level including gym activities and
competitive sports. The nature of health
insurance has encouraged discharge of
patients from PT services prior to obtaining
full functional recoveries. Patients are
often discharged with self reported 75-90%
functional recoveries due to a lack of
adequate PT sessions to obtain 100% returns.
This fact becomes especially apparent with
post-surgical patients that are often
discharged after 2-3 months when they
actually are recommended to complete 4-12
months of supervised rehabilitation. PT’s
often have to instruct the patient on their
last sessions on how to progress the next
4-12 months of their recovery and the
patient is left to self-supervise their
programs. Often this leads to patients
trying to return to sport too soon, or not
completing the sport-specific aspects of
their rehabilitation that are crucial to
successful outcomes.
• If the patient chooses to seek guidance in
continuing their recovery they often
continue under the supervision of personal
trainers who may lack adequate knowledge of
proper progression of activities following
certain surgical procedures. PT’s have
extensive knowledge of the phases of tissue
healing and can design programs that do not
place undue stress on healing structures. We
have seen countless numbers of patients
return to our clinic after exacerbating
their injury following discharge from PT due
to overaggressive programs designed by
personal trainers or self prescribed
programs.
